Day 71 — Michikajima Island to Omishima Island

We awoke to another cool, grey day.  While it would have been nice to have blazing sunshine for the rest of the Kaido, at least it wasn’t raining.

We got a bit of a late start, as we ended up chatting with a Japanese man who was also camping, having travelled from his hometown on Honshu by moped.  He turned out to be quite the world traveller — SE Asia, Europe, Russia and the Baltics, Scandinavia, Central America, Nepal and India.  We were shocked when he told us he was 71 — he looked maybe 50!

The rest of the day was wending our way across islands and getting on and off bridges. There were lots of tourists doing this as a supported day trip. As we rode along, we saw so many foreigners on Blue Giant Escapes, with front baskets with day bags in them.

It was really a day of crossing islands and moving between bridges. We really were amazed at the level of infrastructure and the way it accommodated or incorporated cyclists. All of which has led this to be a cycling specific trip for tourists, which was evident in the numbers of day trippers, even though being well into November and being deep into the offseason.

These bridges are not small…

We ended up doing a bit of a loop and ending up returning the way we came, ending up at a campground underneath an overpass to a bridge (through less nice than last night’s campground, and worse, not free), adjacent to a “cyclists’s sanctuary”.  Luckily we found an onsen a short walk away, and got a soak in before bed.
