Day 4 on Yakushima….a more strenuous hike

We  like where we are so we have spent 2 nights here in Andover. This has given us time to do  another hike today up in the mountains before we head off..  It sounds like it will be more difficult  but much of it will be on paths with wooden or stone walkways.

People come from all over Japan and Internationally to trek in the wilds of Yakushima. However, fans of Anime films also flock here.Yakushima inspired the best known Japanese Anime Film Maker, Hayao Miyazaki, to use this island as the setting and location for his critically acclaimed movie, Princess NMononokr.

Memories of a special day we had riding on the east coast with many interactions with the monkeys and deer, both native to Yakushima.

We have left our trikes at the Tourist Office and are awaiting a bus to take us up in the mountains for a hike.

Like yesterday, the road up to our hike is steep with constant tight turns. We are getting up there.

The work and skill that has gone into providing to creating roads in a challenging environment. It can be a bit unnerving to glance over the side and the view is straight down.

A narrow road with very frequent curves and twists in the road.

Looking down to the small port town of Miyanoura where our trikes are parked and where we will take the ferry to Kagoshima tomorrow.

The power of water and the many streams and waterfalls which make their way down.

Beautiful but not easy with uneven steps…but we’ll get there…slow and steady!

Oops, a detour due to damage from a recent typhoon.

This is a steep one…it helps to be distracted by our surroundings…no roads or cars….just us, the trees and unspoiled nature.

Barry, as a tall guy in Japan, always needs to have his wits about him so as not to hit his head.

Still smiling…we are lucky to have a nice day for this hike. The only downside is that the climbing up and down has been unrelenting. A good sleep and a ferry ride tomorrow should help us recover.

The hiking paths are kept in quite good condition. The work is constant and ongoing with the frequent rain creating challenges. . The intent is to be as nonintrusive as possible keeping the nature as indisturbed as possible.

The philosophy is that whenever possible, fallen trees are not moved. There have recently been 2 typhoons which have felled several older trees. This has resulted in the closure of some trails and detours.

We have loved our time up here. We are tired and it may take a few days for my knees to be happy, but it has been worth the challenge. A memorable day.

We have started and ended our time on Yakushima at the same accommodation. We like the cabin and its homey features. Plus we are only a few km from the port where we will take the 4 hour ferry ride north to Yakushima.
