Do you celebrate the New Year with a Spreadsheet?

Wayne Estes

How many Cycleblazer readers reflect on the accomplishments of each year by looking at a spreadsheet of bicycle mileage?

Thanks to an organized Asperger syndrome brain, I have a spreadsheet of monthly bicycle mileage since 1986 when I started cycling at age 25.

The spreadsheet says:
4337 miles/6939 km in 2025
174,906 miles/279,850 km cumulative since 1986

Wishing everybody a Happy New Year and more pedaling adventures in 2026.

Wayne as much as I like lists, I don’t do spreadsheets. However, I’ve unwittingly obtained a Garmin function which emails me a monthly tally table of my ride distances. It seems I average about 500-700km a month when I’m not cycle touring.

I also rely on RideWithGPS to provide my statistics for the year.

Oh how I wish I kept track of our non touring distances, but alas, even though I start each month with the intention to record daily distances, somehow, like many good intentions, it seems to get overwhelmed by the weather or the minutia of daily life. When we are on a tour it is easier since the daily distance is part of our blogging routine. There, now I have a New Year's resolution. The best wishes of the season to all, and hoping for health, love and joy to all of you, preferably from the seat of a bicycle.  Grampie Dodie

Yes indeed, I’ve been keeping a spreadsheet since 2013, which is when I started to get more serious about cycling. Showing about 36000 miles so far, which is small potatoes compared to what most Cycleblazers are doing. Now for running, I’ve got spreadsheets going back a lot farther than that. And of course there were paper logs before that, although they all seem to have disappeared over time. I guess I’m better at keeping ahold of digital data versus physical.

I do keep a spreadsheet of miles ridden.  Last year was pretty dismal as I barely logged 1,000 miles.  For 2023 I logged some 3,500 miles and was prepared to go on tour but got waylaid by some medical nonsense.  2024 was almost an exact repeat; I logged about 3,200 miles training and was ready to go on tour when, once again, medical nonsense interfered.  I think I was a bit depressed in 2025, and I knew that I needed a bit of tuneup work (me, not the bicycle) that would prevent me from touring, so I didn't ride much.  2026 will be different - I mean, I've never been here before, so it has to be different! Best of luck to all, may your spreadsheets document a great year of cycling. Peace out,
