Staying at Tarumizu by the sea in the shadow of an active volcano
It is hard to believe how cold it was last night. Even though we are in the forest, the property extends to the ocean which brings in a mist and cold, damp air. The heating pad really helped. This morning is sunny and warm.
We are packed up and ready to go. We have really enjoyed camping here in this campground with excellent amenities….and cats
The trees have developed a natural lean inland due to the winds from the ocean. The campground is predominately a natural forest with brick pathways to guide you on your way. The campground provides a very satisfying environment to spend time here.
Our host is a real character with a great sense of humour and very hospitable. You’ve got to like a fellow who puts his energy into rescuing cats and providing a sanctuary for adults and families to camp.
Today we are heading for the town of Tarumizu where we will stay before heading on to Kagoshima for a few days…either by ferry or riding across Sakurajina, the location of a very active volcano. We’ll go with whatever the day brings.
A nice view from a small bridge of a meandering river surrounded by lush growth.
We often see mowers and gardening equipment being loaded on a truck. This older woman had a unique style of unloading it from the truck with her arms straight up. But first she powered it up and then backed it down the ramp. Nice job..she got it done, slow and sure.
It is unusual to see multiple good luck banners in front of a business…usually there is just one. Nonethess, it can’t hurt and maybe the owner has many well wishers.
A preschool with a customary colourful and cute exterior. Elementary schools and preschools make a big effort to make the exterior inviting to their young students.
We are approaching our destination. A sign like this tells us that there will be Onsens with hot springs in this town…always a good thing for our sore and tired bodies.
The ride to Tarumizu for the final 10 km is a delight. The road is excellent and it is completely downhill. This is a payoff for the climbing we have done already, and the ocean views are incredible.
Barry, embracing the moment and joining these lads in their warm ups. The sign on the wall translates as…Nurture the body.
We have difficulty passing a Fairfield by Marriott hotel without stopping as we really like them. They are reasonably priced, beautifully decorated with comfy beds, a couch and incredible shower. But best of all are the common areas. There is a well stocked kitchen with high end appliances, a lounge, outside seating and adisplay of local crafts and folklore. Our room here is under $100 including tax.
Looking out our hotel room window at the stunning sunset. We are looking towards Kagoshima across the water.
