From paradise to paradise…part 1 - A Pre Knee Replacement tour of Japan - CycleBlaze

From paradise to paradise…part 1

What a great time we have had staying in Aoshima for 2 nights.  It was a good decision to give ourselves more time in this beautiful and interesting place.  The move between hotels could not have been easier as the hotels are located  across the road from each other.
We have had to carefully plan the next few days as heavy rain is forecast and it looks like it will be continuous.  We have learned during our travels in Japan that weather predictions are unfailingly accurate so we have decided to stay in Nango at the Prince Hotel for 2 nights.  We will once again be situated on the ocean in our little piece of paradise…away from other buildings and surrounded by lush forests and palm trees.   We will buy provisions before we check in  so that we don’t have to leave if the weather is as predicted.

Our room at the ANA Holiday Inn Resort. Not only does our room have a great view of the water, the Onsen on the top floor has floor to ceiling windows with a killer view.

These small, decorative round carpets with your room # and the lantern are at the door of every guest room. A sweet design detail in our hotel.

We seem to be attracted to these grand old Japanese hotels from another era. Everything is oversized, grand and spacious. You can feel the history throughout the property. Due to its age and the competition from newer hotels, the price here is affordable.

Elevators with a view. Note the elevator on the right. You can see a person in fluorescent yellow…that’s Barry on his way down.

The pool is closed at the moment due to maintenance.

Surfing is a huge draw here, for locals and visitors.

Speaking of oversized….this pretty vase is taller than me…and then you add the flowers.

The entrance to the hotel. We were given covered parking for our trikes to the side of the entrance.😺👍

We can see that surfing is not just an activity, rather, it is a lifestyle of passion and commitment to their love of the sea.  We see such cameraderie and kinship amongst surfers.

We watched this fellow, who is a visitor, surf without a wet suit. We felt cold just watching him. Nonetheless, he clearly has a lot of surfing experience.

We will cycle out of town on this walkway and enjoy being by the ocean and the palm trees.

The dad was going through some instructions on surfing with his daughters before they head out.

A love of surfing is shared by all in this family.  How lucky they are to share this passion with each other.

This aerial view of Aoshima Island taken at low tide high, provides an excellent view of the Devil’s Washboard surrounding the Island.

Aoshima Island…not to be missed, if you are in the area. As well as being a place of great spiritual significance for locals, it is a beautiful place with much to see and do in such a small area.

Carsten and Vera from Australia are cycle touring as well. They began their trip in Hokkaido. We have cycled in Hokkaido on 2 trips and it’s a great place to visit.

This statue of the family Ninigi-no-Mikoto gathering by the seashore is very striking. Ninigi is a Japanese deity, grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu. His descent to earth established the divine origin of the Yamato clan, the Imperial House of Japan He is said to have been the great grandfather of the first Emperor Jimmu of Japan. He met his wife to be when he descended to earth and this statue features his family.

We have taken a detour to visit a Michi-no-Eki which is a climb but rewards us with a beautiful view.

At the Michi we met this fellow with his wee dog. The dog was a bit freaked out by us.

Ohhh, soft serve in Japan is the best. My chocolate cone tasted like dark chocolate fudge and was so creamy…yum.

Somehow, shrimp ice cream doesn’t appeal to us. I am surprised that Barry hasn’t tried it yet. He’s like the kid on the commercial from our childhood. The expression was…”Give it to Mikey, he’ll eat it!”

Karen Poret“…I’m not going to try it, You try it, No, let’s get Mikey.. He likes it! Hey Mikey!” ..Thanks, Mary Ellen..Now I won’t be able to forget this phrase for a while😂

You can see why we like this coastline so much. It is the gift that keeps on giving. Just when you think you have seen the best, it just gets better. Another plus is that traffic on the road is pretty light.

We’re thinking that they must serve lobster here.

It is a day of much wind and dropping temperatures, but it doesn’t get in the way of stopping to admire where we are.

We encountered a couple and their two dogs. They are fishing for the day. This black lab was a bundle of energy and so excited. I will never forget watching the lab approach Barry and as he got closer, the excitement got the better of him. He was jumping up and down on all four paws, with his tail wagging furiously.

This is definitely a day of many dogs, all of whom have been very excited to see us. This couple have their hands full with two large dogs, the lab and this guy. They are well loved.

No way through that we can see.

Yikes 🥴 the cycle route which winds around the shoreline is closed. Now we will have to backtrack and take the main road. It is getting windy and colder, we will need to make up time.

The coastline offers so much…rugged beauty, serene beaches, vistas that go forever….so memorable.

Yeah. This tunnel is most welcome as we will not have to climb a series of monster hills. This tunnel is quite long at 1 km and 386 m.
