Riding the Shimanami Kaido back to Imabari - A Pre Knee Replacement tour of Japan - CycleBlaze

Riding the Shimanami Kaido back to Imabari

Today we will retrace our steps and ride the Shimanami Kaido in the opposite direction back to Imabari. On a previous trip we have ridden this route in one day, but this time, we want to take our time with a night camping enroute.

We truly like the Kokusai Hotel in Onimichi. It is comfortable, reasonably priced and the bike parking is exceptional.

It has been nice to stay at his hotel again. Raring to go and looking forward to hitting the trail. Yesterday was a challenging ride as my knee was terrible. One leg riding is not the best, but necessary at times. Today feels like a better day.

The port in Onomichi is an interesting place with different types of ships at port.

We met this local couple at the port and had fun visiting with these fellow bike lovers. They admired our trikes and we also admired their Bramptons. Such beautiful bikes with an instant easy fold.

He tried out Barry’s trike. They had never seen a recumbent trike before.

Truly, one of the primary joys of travel are meeting interesting, local people.

Really liked the colour of her Brompton and the leather seat.

His bike had very nice leather accents on the handlebars, fender and seat.

Cycling has become a major part of tourism thanks to the Shimanami Kaido.

A new bike store has just opened. We love the window.

A close up of one of the panels on the window.

Japan has created an interesting way to travel without carrying luggage. Many travellers leave their luggage at their hotel and then it is delivered to their next hotel. This is the first time we have seen it available at lockers.

Lovely jerseys for the Shimanami. Unfortunately they are designed to fit the lean physique of a Japanese rider, not 70+ Canadians!

As you can see, we are having trouble leaving the city of Onomichi. We do like it here. Mr Donut is very different in Japan with table service, free refills and many savoury items.

Must have donuts….old fashioned plain (yum) and with glaze plus a cinnamon donut.

The ferry has arrived to take us to the first island of the day.

On our first bridge, the experience is different as we ride on a level below the cars.

It is smart planning having 3% gradients for bridge access which encourages riders of all abilities to ride the route.

We see lots of day riders on rental bikes as well.

We keep seeing this guy. He always greets us with a big smile, as do all of the Japanese people we see along the way.

The lush growth of citrus fruits: limes, lemons and mandarin oranges, makes for a delicious ride. We always have a bag of mandarins in our pack.

Not to worry, this 26% drop is not for cyclists. Yikes.

Oh yes, the Bartlett’s are camping tonight- bad weather is coming.

Set up just in time. The rain is starting. We are jinxed on this trip- it rains only when we camp!

Heading back to Imabari.

Dinner at the konbini next to the campground- ME had beef with ginger noodles and B had a combo plate of spaghetti, hamburger with sauce and an omelet over rice.

Like this manhole cover with an image of the suspension bridges on the Shimanami Kaido.

This sweet cat was very wary but looked healthy thanks to the staff at the Konbini who feed him and a few other cats. We donated to their fund.

This fellow was so pleased to chat with us. He makes cycling jerseys and sells them here.

Today feels like a good day for riding. The weather is good and we had a good sleep in our tent.

Michi no Ekis are fun to visit. Each location features local produce, seafood and crafts. As well, we often eat at the restaurant onsite which features local food and is reasonably priced.

The flavours are so good. It seems like you are drinking a freshly picked mandarin.

We saw a large group from Indonesia who are cycle touring the Shimanami. This woman, also from Indonesia, is one of the organizers who is leading the tour.

Just taking it all in. We are riding at quite a height on the suspension bridge and enjoying our surroundings…the lush hills and ocean below. Today it is very windy and the crosswinds on the bridge are quite a challenge.

Due to the winds and storm last night, there is a lot of fallen debris which Barry is kindly removing.

Lots of water on the route today from the rainstorm last night.

This is called Oden which is very popular. It consists of several ingredients, such as, boiled eggs, daikon and processed fish cakes stewed in a light soy flavoured dashi broth.

It is quite a vibrant sight to see these blinged out trucks.

A group of riders from Hong Kong. We did this ride a few years ago and we are struck by how much it has grown in attracting riders from all over the world. Today, we have met people from Indonesia, China, Hong Kong, Canada, UK etc.
