Day 19: Santa Clara to Telchac Puerto

The Santa Clara turned out to be beautiful, when we could see it in daylight. It is composed of mostly independent ground level bungalows, and there are three very nice pools. They are purified with the salt system that gives the water a salty taste, and that seems to maintain crystal clarity.

Here is the car that rescued us yesterday. It's a Toyota hybrid, This was my first ride in a hybrid and the power flow screen was fascinating. There are three power use/generation points: the battery, the engine, and the drive motor. Power flows to and from each of these very fluidly, depending on what the car is doing. I was surprised at the speed of switching among modes. However since this is not a plug-in, it is only shuffling cards while always ending up at the gas station.

Sophia, the daughter of the Santa Clara family, has learned English well at school. Dodie wrote a note for her English teacher, commending Sophia's ability to communicate. Sophia is 15 but could already tell us she wants to grow up to be a dentist. Dentist! That was material for lots of chatting about my experience in Coba!

Here we are with Sophie:

The Santa Clara backs onto a mangrove swamp, but we did not spot any birds there. However it is across the street from salt flats.

There we found lots of waders, and some others, including an Osprey. Like this:

Steve Miller/GrampiesTo Karen PoretThere are many members of the Plover family all over the world. Not sure what the range of this one is or what its protection status is.

Steve Miller/GrampiesTo Karen PoretNot a usual wing position. Maybe this bird has a secret ambition to be a ball player?

Now we headed down the coastal road, in the direction of Telchac Puerto.

There were, of course, flamingos!

We ran into construction projects along the coastline, in varying states of completion. We know we will find lots more as we get closer to Progreso.

This blog post is going to be rather compressed (hooray?) because the charger for my laptop has died, and I am using my last electrons to write this, before finding a replacement somewhere.

However I do want to mention the latest "Disfruta" product we have found - this one a licuada with banana and sort of chocolate chunks. A new favourite!

Our place in Telchac Puerto also played coy about exact location, and we spun down the road 5 km too far before wising up. It's called the Sak Naj, and it is really nice. Our door opens to a breezeway that is really breezy, and the room is large and clean, with a fridge!

This pool also was a great cool off, though too cool for Dodie, who settled for a (cool) shower.

Until the charger issue is resolved, posts may be a little sparse. But we have a tablet and will still be able to put up a little text daily. Photos, not so much. Stay tuned.

Today's ride: 39 km (24 miles)
Total: 672 km (417 miles)
