Day 11: The Medical System II

Another  CAT scan got done yesterday, but we were given no indication about who would analyse it and how the results would get communicated back to us. We thought this could be an important point, since if I am scheduled to drop dead shortly, this would be a matter of some curiosity.

I called the Chemainus Urgent Care centre, and they said they sent the results to the Rapid Stroke Assessment unit at Victoria General.  So I phoned there. They had a recorded message that said their hours are 9-5, Monday to Friday, and not on holidays, or something like that. And they said leave a message, and the call could get returned in about 4 days. I left a message, and both Dodie and Laurie noted that my tone was a "little" peevish. My theme was that my command of English must be weak, because I thought they were the "Rapid" assessment people.

On reflection, though, I understand their frame of reference. If you are having a stroke, or symptoms are worsening, their message said, call 911. So that would trigger an ambulance visit, and the more rapid 10 hour or whatever timing for service at hospital Emergency. However, if you are done having the stroke and are now paralysed and whatever, then they will "rapidly" document that and in "swift" order begin the possibly multi-year process of putting you back together. You just gotta understand where they are coming from. I guess.

Meanwhile, though my balance, strength, stamina are a fraction of what I had when we left for Germany, I am way better than on that day in Calbe, when we called the ambulance, and Juergen out for the urgent rescue. We are almost second guessing now whether it was necessary to come home.

Our nurse friend Erika recommended a lot of resting, but again that's not me. I took advantage of Laurie's having driven up from Seattle to launch with her a series of plumbing and electrical repairs around the place. She helped a lot with crawling into tight spaces (with spiders! she says), carrying heavy equipment, and checking that my logic was right on the procedures we were doing. And she drove me to the hardware store twice. It was really a lot of fun!

Laurie brought back photos from the scarier excursions.

Laurie did double duty, undertaking to show Dodie the workings of our recently purchased Bolt EV. Dodie had steadfastly been maintaining that she did not want to know about it. Though Dodie is an electric bike rider, the electric nature did not endear the Bolt to her. She seemed to still think of it as a car. Dodie hates cars. Previously she would only reluctantly drive our manual transmission VW Van. But if I might not be counted on to drive, Dodie acknowledged she might have to know how to make the Bolt go. She got it up to 45 kph, and 5 km down the back road. Good enough!

Meanwhile, Dodie went out also on her bike. 20-30 km is the daily routine while we are around here. One day soon I might join her. That would then demonstrate that we came home for no reason.  Hmmmph.

Kathleen ClassenBetter to come home and be sure you are right as rain. Then you can go back to Germany feeling confident about your health. Glad to hear things are improving, and hoping that continues apace so you can get back to riding your bike.

Sue PriceAbsolutely agree! Being away from home and not sure what is going on is NOT a fun way to travel!

Bob KoreisAnother in KC's camp. Glad to hear you are feeling better, but I'd rather you know the cause and can travel without worry than shrugging it off and see another medical emergency post from you or anyone here.

And I'm with Dodie. The more time I spend behind the wheel of a bus, the sooner I want to move to a place where I can live car free.
