About
My brother and I did a one-week ride down the California coast a million years ago when I graduated college. We followed our paper map and camped in the hike/biker campsites that California made available to anyone without a car where we met fellow cyclist who showed us to their hand built bikes with frames from a new company named Trek. It was great fun.
After that we largely we went our separate ways, got married, bought houses, and started families. I moved to Washington State with my wife and three small boys (the girl came later) while he and his family remained in Southern California. I kept cycling, commuting to work or hauling children in our Burley trailer on weekends. The children grew up, moved away and started their own families and I was back to cycling alone. Then in 2012 my brother called me with a problem. He said he had too much vacation since his wife also worked and received half the vacation he did. He suggested we do another one week bike trip, this time in British Columbia, Canada. I didn't get as much vacation as my brother, but I got enough vacation that I could not afford to spend all of it with my wife in accommodations up to her standards. So, we embarked on our second bike tour.
Since then we have done a ride almost every year. These days Doug's wife joins us and sometimes other family members or friends. My wife has had some health challenges that rules out bicycling, but she graciously encourages me to go without her. My wife and I do get our own adventures that involve cars, airplanes and trains, but no bicycles.
This is me cycling on the Selkirk Loop in Idaho a number of years back.

And this is Fiona, the bike I mostly ride these days. It's not as fast as my other bikes, and those aren't fast to start with, but that's alright as I'm always more interested in the ride than the destination. Unless the destination is Chipotle with a burrito waiting, then I'm interested in the destination.
