Day 329-349: Devon
We didn’t really have a plan for riding through France, just an end date to avoid overstaying our visa, and a desire to end up on a ferry to the UK. It’s similar for the UK. We’ve ridden ourselves into a corner with summer ending and we have no Europe visa time left. Ideally we'd be heading south now to Italy and Spain rather than north into the UK. It’s not a coincidence that we’ve stumbled across Lucy’s place in Devon. We had vague plans to ride the length of the UK. Or walk it. Or do something.
We’re tired after the journey from Africa to Europe. We’ve decided to take a bit of time off the bikes. We must look very lazy in the UK, but we’ve ridden only 60km in 2 weeks. We’ve been on a couple of runs, but it’s been about equal measure hiding from the rain and just doing nothing for the last 2 weeks. And joining in with parties on the weekends.
And more than that, we’re going to fly back to Australia for 6 weeks from mid-September. A few jobs need our attention in Oz, and it’ll be nice to see family again. The bike trip hopefully isn’t completely over. We’re leaving the bikes in southern England to make sure we come back. But the continuous trip from Africa to Europe is going to be broken here. A year is a pretty good length of time to be away from home, and we’ve been going more-or-less constantly for 11 months. 20,000km across all sorts of terrain: Desert, jungle, densely populated, elephant infested. Time for a break. We don’t know for sure where the next bike leg will be. Likely we won’t be on the bikes for the foreseeable future (and since this is a bike touring blog site) we’ll wind-up the blog here.
Thanks for coming along!
Today's ride: 119 km (74 miles)
Total: 15,558 km (9,662 miles)
