Cape of Good Hope

Today was a long but fun day.  We started with a visit to a kindergarten in a township, very poor area mostly for the black families.  It was started in 1994 by an amazing woman named Mavis who is now 76 years old.  She started in her home with 45 kids and now runs a school for 300 aged 6 months to 6 years.  She gets a stipend from the government for every child that shows up each day but relies heavily on donations.  African Bikers has been one of their benefactors for years.  A few years ago a Norwegian man made a donation of 1M Rand that allowed her to build proper classrooms  and a kitchen since they feed the kids 2 meals a day.  She is truly an amazing woman.

After that we had a long, slow drive to the Cape of Good Hope the most southerly point in Africa.  We rode our bikes from here back towards Cape Town over Chapman’s Peak, a road only for cars, no trucks.  It was a stunningly beautiful day with another tail wind but with a few strong gusty side winds.  We stopped just short to the city to load the bikes for the last time.

Hanging out of the van window waiting to get started for the day.

A view of a township as we drove by. Officially 300,000 people live here but the reality is probably 1M people.

They live in tin shacks with no running water or indoor toilets. Electricity is provided by the government.

The greatest fear here is fire because they live so close together

Your vehicle had to meet these dimensions to travel this road plus it was a toll road. Our van and trailer wasn’t allowed so Kim had to drive up, over and around the mountain. We actually beat him to the meeting point.
