Uniondale - The eighteenth step ... Heading home from the Kalahari - CycleBlaze

Uniondale

Friday the 21st of November 2025

A late start made even later by a long roadside conversation with the farm owner just before we reached the main road to Willowmore, the R341.  Once we turned off the R341 onto the R339 that would take us to Uniondale,  it became a hard slog as we tackled a  climb of a few hundred meters into a strong headwind.

Despite it being a short ride we were pretty flat by the time we reached our digs in Uniondale,  more psychological that physical because the wind had really dampened our spirits.

Later in the afternoon I took a walk through the veld to one of the four tiny fortification that had been hastily built by the British during the Anglo-Boer War after the town had briefly been taken by a small commando lead by Commandant Gideon Scheepers.

I had another walk through the veld again today, this time on the opposite side of the town.  Apart from that we rested up and prepared for what is likely to be  tough ride through the Prince Alfred Pass to Plettenberg Bay on the  coast, a ride we will spread over two days.
