Prince Albert

After yesterday's efforts, an easier day was called for and so it was until the last few kilometers into Prince Albert when a slow poison ascent combined with a fresh headwind to make it a bit of a slog.

Like many small towns in South Africa, Prince Albert shouts out its name in white-painted stones on a hillside above the town.

After a bit of to-and-froing, we finally settled on a very nice guesthouse for the night and wandered off to have a very nice and rather liquid lunch at a restaurant attached to the Swartberg Hotel, one of the many attractive old buildings in the town.

The Swartberg Hotel.

A large gin and a nice weisbier to get lunch started.

Like many small towns, Prince Albert shuts down on a Sunday afternoon.   I had planned to stock up on groceries for supper and the days ahead.  Unfortunately the very nice local supermarket was shut when I cycled over there at about four o'clock.   This is despite its owner have recently updated its opening hours on Google Maps saying it was open until five on a Sunday afternoon.   The only available alternative for supper was a nice piece of carrot cake from a coffee shop nearby.  I'll have to stock up on the other groceries before we leave town tomorrow morning.
