Some Random Photos from Bangkok

I just wanted to include a bunch of random shots I took in Bangkok during our three-day stay.

Just a stone's throw from our hotel in Bangkok is a newly discovered part of town that for some reason the young international selfie crowd has really taken to.  It's near the Chao Phraya River and in the midst of old vehicle parts shops.  The entire area reeks of old oil and workers at the shops are working hard fixing old metal parts and are covered in grease.  The buildings are very old and some are barely holding together - perfect for a cool new cafe!  This new hip area is known as Song Sawat.  The new little very cute cafes are centered mostly on Song Wat Street.  I didn't photograph any of them this time, maybe when we return at the end of February I will.  I have a hard time with the whole selfie thing that has exploded.  It's mostly made up of young women in very ugly (my opinion) flowing white dresses taking photos of each other as well as millions of selfies.  Are there really that many narcissistic young women or has the smart phone created them.  These two questions swirl in my mind when I see them in ridiculous poses.   So, I didn't photograph any of them either.  Maybe when we return at the end of February.  I just hope the phenomenon passes before then!  I don't know if I will be able to actually go into one of the new cooler than cool cafes and order coffee because I can get it for one fifth the cost anywhere else.  I just don't get it or it's that I'm now an old guy.

Anyway, Bangkok is a photographer's dream.  Enjoy a few photos.

This place is right next door to our hotel in Bangkok. No idea what's behind these doors though.

Marsha HanchrowThanks for the closer view. I couldn't really see the pattern from the previous photo.

Wouldn't it be nice in The States to just put a bungee cord across the entrance to the store (closed!) and go to lunch. This shop is two doors down from our hotel.

I love this area of pipes and parts which starts just a block from our hotel in Bangkok.

This area of pipes, old vehicle parts, grease and a century or more of oil saturating the ground and the entire area redolent of old oil is the new hip place to be for selfies, not so much in front of the old vehicle parts but near all the new little cafes. These women, while walking through the area of old oil were stopped dead in their tracks by a cat.

Usually homes double as stores and are passed down to the next generation.

One of the old buses which are still just fine on cool days which we lucked out with during our stay in Bangkok. Kind of unheard of to have low temps in Bangkok.

Marsha HanchrowI'd much rather someone else cook these so they'd be ground up and I wouldn't have to know. If we're gonna eat meat, this is the way to do it, but I'm still too American and squeamish to do it knowingly.

Andrea BrownTo Marsha HanchrowBefore every trip I solemnly vow to eat some of these and every time I’m all, “naw I’m good”.

Marsha HanchrowAnd it occurs to me that they're fried snacks to be popped into your mouth, not ingredients to be blended surreptitiously into a dish.

The sticks in the barrel to the right of the person are cinnamon sticks.

One time walking around near Chinatown we were suddenly on a street where every shop sold rope.

Used dishes. I bought a couple of odd drinking glasses for 30 cents each.
