Avery to St. Maries Idaho

48

Elevation gain: 764 feet

Today, we had two choices. The easy, smooth, paved road that followed the river, or the gravel Old Milwaukee road. My brother of course chose the gravel road.

To be fair, the gravel road I'm sure was the safer route. My research had some sources saying the paved road was a great ride, while others complained of logging trucks and narrow shoulders.

The gravel road was an old rail bed heading down a river, so it should have been an easy day. But it was gravel road of varying quality and turned into a bit of a slog.

But the highlight of the day was an official, live moose sighting. My brother saw it first of course, and luckily pointed it out to me or I probably would have missed it. It was standing in knee deep water in the river next to a camp ground and much harder to spot than the dead moose I nearly ran over (yet still didn't see) a couple of days back.

Pretty much what the road was like all day

We followed this river all day. That's a nice paved road on the other side we didn't take.

This restaurant was our only option for lunch. When we went in, we found the cook sitting behind the cash register. He told us he couldn't serve us because the waitress had not shown up yet. This seemed an odd impediment seeing that we were the only customers with no signs of additional customers showing up anytime soon. He did sell us some some potato chips and candy bars, so that was lunch.

A moose! After many years searching for a moose, I can now say that live moose do exist in the wild.
