Lyle, the first time someone set out one of those chairs for me I thought I’d break it. I guess they are a good judge of how sturdy the chairs are and I am biker weight :)

Not a surprise to any Vietnamese! That's pretty much the standard breakfast for most people there - Phó Bo ... (or Phó Ga if chicken instead of beef) , as is sitting on the road / sidewalk on a small plastic stool. It grows on you!

That’s great advice Dodie, thank you :). Tomorrow will be a shorter day than today and I’m taking the more direct route to add rest days.

Oh, poor you and your ouchie. Try to get some Vaseline, or baby diaper cream, to prevent sticking to your shorts. Meticulous cleaning, multiple times during the day and, of course, at night in a shower really helps. Honestly, ride shorter days, like maybe no more than 75 or 80 km. When you find a nice place stay for a few days and keep off the bike. The wound needs time to heal. I speak both from recent personal experience, and as a nurse. Hope this clears up soon! Dodie

It’s a mix. Last night was the lowest budget place. Terrible location. No soap in the room but the AC worked great so I can’t complain.

How are the accommodations once you find them?

Steve, it felt great to have that greeting but that would get old fast! I can’t even imagine.

On the sore front I’ve never had one like this! I blame wearing bike shorts (the padded ones) on day 1 and 2. I’ve had hot spots before where the skin has to toughen.

It’s all those feelings Rich! Now that I am riding I find the scooter traffic isn’t an issue. Occasionally there are some bold passes the opposite way where I’m happy to be riding the shoulder.

Wild! I can feel the excitement and stress in your description. Congratulations on surviving the first day!

Speaking from (painful) experience, use baby wipes often during the day to clean any sore areas. It is the heat and long mileage, plus chafing and sweating, that sets you up for a nasty inflamed "pain in the butt". The sore I developed on day 2 of this trip is just now, after 3 weeks, feeling much improved. Dodie

How does it feel to be greeted like a rockstar?

Most likely for eggs, baby chicks and, when too old, for supper.

Maybe quail grass.
