Sri Lankan floods - Sri Lanka 2026 - CycleBlaze

Sri Lankan floods

At the end of November 2025 Sri Lanka was hit by a cyclone which gave bad flooding.  Problems were compounded by seasonal rains then falling onto saturated ground.  The result was flooding in lower coastal areas and mud slides inland.  Around 600 dead by 10/12/25 when I am writing this, with many missing.

I have wondered about cancelling.   I don’t want to be a tourist, another mouth to feed and be in the way when those around are suffering.   On the other hand Sri Lanka needs it’s tourist industry to provide foreign exchange and the money that I spend in the country will be going direct to small hotels and shops.

Opposite where I live is a convenience store which is run by a Sri Lankan family from Jafna.   I have been talking with them.  They are emphatic that I should go.   They are in contact with relatives back in SL.  They are aware of the situation and say that most of the island is quickly recovering and in two months time there should be few problems.   I like their optimism and I hope they are correct.   SL seems a very resilient country.  It has suffered civil war, tsunami, corrupt governments….. and recovers.   So at the moment I am still planning to travel there in early February 2026.

Steve Miller/GrampiesYou are probably right to keep your trip plans in place. It would be a different story if you were leaving next week, or in the middle of the disaster event. We rode in to Valencia a few years ago, in the middle of their terrible flooding event. Since we do not keep up with the news when on tour we were complerely unaware of the problem. Once aware we did a quick pivot of plan and stayed longer in the city which was not directly impacted.

Andy BuchanTo Steve Miller/GrampiesThanks Steve.
We on this forum are in a privileged position, with a greater contrast in SL than Spain. It is not the possible dangers that worry me, more that if I did get hurt then my insurance would (hopefully) kick in and help me while locals around me were denied that help…..and if nothing bad to me happened then I would still be consuming local food and water needed by others.

Even now tourists are visiting SL and their media seems to be encouraging people to continue with their trips. In two months time as the rains reduce then hopefully life there will improve.

Regards
Andy

Steve Miller/GrampiesTo Andy BuchanExactly right. When we cancelled our reservation in the town impacted by the flooding the hotel owner thanked us, saying that now he had one more room for the emergency workers. We felt better about our privileged lives knowing that at least we were staying out of the way instead of consuming resources needed by people who were already in a tough situation.
