in the interim - My Midlife Crisis - CycleBlaze

August 22, 2025 to September 2, 2025

in the interim

My time off was filled with the usual activities of being at home:  underwater hockey, synchronized lawnmower dancing, unicycle jousting, and chainsaw juggling... you know, just like everyone else.

And now I'm back, this time with a riding companion, Lori. This is her first bike tour, and you'll get to know her better as we travel together. Because she works remotely, she's able to combine some vacation time with some work days to be able to go on this trip.

Our starting point is Petoskey and already her logistical insight has been beneficial. Instead of searching for a place to stay in touristy/expensive Petoskey, we decided to camp at the Wilderness State Park tonight and tomorrow night, where we'll end up at the end of our first day of riding.

However, the real benefit (besides the fact that we can leave our bags at the campsite) is that the Northern Lights are supposed to be visible tonight, and Wilderness is a Dark Sky Park. Seeing the sky on fire with no light pollution sounds like an ideal experience to add to the checklist of this bike trip.

What DOESN'T sound like an ideal experience to add to the checklist of this bike trip is having "The World's Stinkiest Vault Toilet.” That’s one superlative I could skip. Pit toilets, by nature, always smell bad, but in this instance I had to shave all of the skin off my body after exiting.
