Day 5: Cancun (Day 3)

We changed our plan for today to handle a slight glitch. After weeks getting ready for this trip, which included counting and recounting both prescription meds and things like cold tablets and pain pills, Dodie realized last night that she had left behind most of the most important ones - hers for blood pressure. Of course, this realization involved launching a search of all our stuff, more than once, but it was true.

Our first move today was to go back to the storage unit to check there. When we told Erika, the lady at the desk there why we were back, she crossed herself and prayed for us. The prayers were nice, but did not produce the meds. Mexico however is if anything a bit more advanced than Canada, for this kind of thing.  We went to a pharmacy, across from our favourite BBQ, where they had a doctor on staff.  After just a very short wait (not weeks, like at home) Dodie was ushered in. The man took her blood pressure and case history, and prescribed the needed meds. The pharmacy then supplied them, and way cheaper than at home. In no time, we were back where we should be - at the BBQ,

Like France, but better.

Our 1/2 chicken came with rice, two salsas, and four very yummy fried chicken filled tortillas (tacos dorados). The listed price for this was 149 pesos. But the great potatoes of yesterday were today not included. Maybe their place was taken by the dorados in the package deal. When I then asked for potatoes as well, the price went up to 199 pesos. But for this I was 19 pesos short. I showed the lady that I was totally broke, but she took no pity. I guess there is no bargaining at this shop! The 19 pesos is about one US dollar. Had they said ok forget it, it would have been a 10% discount. Instead I went to search up Dodie across the street and got a MXN 20 note. Well, you can be sure I asked for and got my 1 peso change (that's 5.6 cents US)!

Our next stop, also near the BBQ was a medium sized grocery. Dodie went in, and came out with some great stuff: cut up papaya, 5 bananas for 11 pesos, more Disfruta yogurt, flan type pudding, more cookies, wow!

Despite this bonanza, I still did not want to let go of my devotion to bakeries. So I took us down the street to another one that I knew of. There I went for a pastry that had to be non-dry, since it was a cone filled with gooey vanilla cream.

At the "last chance" bakery.

When we got back to our room, I jumped in to the pool, to build up an appetite for coffee and this great treat. And it worked out, mostly. The cone was thinking about being dry, but it was still very fresh and held all that gooey vanilla cream. Yum! The price for this was Dieciseis - 16 pesos (89 cents US) - not exactly cheap? By the way, in the cheat sheet that Joni had made for us, this was written Diez y seis. Native Mexican Spanish speakers out there - which is correct?

All the "action" described in today's post happened in the Alfredo Bonfil neighbourhood, , about 10 km south of Cancun city. We have learned where things are in this spot, and we like it a lot. However, if you look at the random photo below, you see that even this close to the big city, it looks like village life, with tumble down houses and no sidewalks. No doubt, that's how we like it!

Hey, how about this "lifer" bird on a wire in Bonfil:

The Yellow Throated Warbler

Scott AndersonWell, there's a bird I'd be pleased to see. I've never been in the right part of the country for it though. Nice shot!
